Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto showcased the city’s initiative to transform recycled glass and plastic into locally produced bricks for ongoing park and playground upgrades.
Sotto featured work at Caniogan Elementary School as one of the projects undertaken by the city’s Engineering–Parks & Playgrounds team, which handles improvements to major parks and smaller community play areas throughout Pasig.
The projects come as the city works to make better use of its limited open spaces. In a May 18 address, Sotto said Pasig needs more areas where children can play and residents can exercise or spend their leisure time. He said city offices were working together to improve existing parks and develop new spaces.
“Hindi puwedeng puro building. Mahalaga ang mga espasyong ganito para sa kalusugan ng bawat isa, at lalong mahalaga para sa development ng mga bata.” Sotto said in a separate post.
The bricks are produced through Pasig’s Innovation for Circular Economy, or I.C.E. Hub, connecting local recycling operations with public-space improvements.
Located on Sandoval Avenue in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, the hub houses facilities for sorting and processing recyclable materials. It has also produced recycled plastic chairs and hosts Bayo Foundation’s HARVEST Creative CommUNITY Hub, which supports livelihood programs involving handwoven and upcycled products.
The United Nations Development Programme said the facility grew from its partnership with Pasig City and was established with city government investment under a Japan-funded circular economy project. This approach keeps materials in use by recovering discarded waste and turning it into new products.
