Washington, D.C. –President Donald Trump issued a statement late Wednesday night following the tragic mid-air collision between a passenger jet and a U.S. Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport.
The crash, which sent the aircraft into the Potomac River, is feared to have resulted in multiple fatalities.
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders.
I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” the president said in a statement from the White House.
Authorities are working around the clock to rescue and recover those affected by the collision. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt assured the public that both federal and local agencies are actively involved in the response.
Speaking with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, she stated, “There are many agencies working together on the response right now, both federal and local law enforcement, to try to save as many lives as possible.”
Efforts to assist those in danger have escalated rapidly. Homeland Security officials confirmed that the U.S. Coast Guard was deploying all available resources for search-and-rescue efforts. “We are actively monitoring the situation and stand ready to support local responders,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Transportation officials have also taken action. Just hours after being sworn in, Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed he was closely monitoring developments from the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters. “I am on site at the FAA HQ and closely monitoring the situation,” he stated.
Expressions of sympathy and concern have poured in from national leaders. House Speaker Mike Johnson described the tragedy as “deeply saddening” and extended prayers to those affected.
A call for national solidarity came from Vice President JD Vance, who urged Americans to pray for the victims and their families. “Please say a prayer for everyone involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan airport this evening,” he posted on social media.
With search and recovery efforts still underway, the administration has vowed to remain engaged and provide timely updates. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the collision, while emergency teams continue to respond to the unfolding crisis.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more details emerge.
