Filipina tennis superstar Alex Eala carved her name into Philippine sports history after defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to win the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, DC.
The 21-year-old became the first player from the Philippines to capture a WTA Tour singles title. She secured the breakthrough Monday, August 3, in Washington, or early Tuesday, August 4, Philippine time, after rain forced the final across two days.
Pegula took the opening set before play stopped with Eala leading 2-1 in the second. When the match resumed, Eala absorbed the pressure and seized control. She won the final nine games, swept the deciding set, and surrendered only eight points in the third.
“I feel so much love. My first chance at a title knowing it won’t be the last and already having achieved this milestone for my career,” Eala said. “I knew whatever happened after this match would have already been a win for me.”
The title capped one of the toughest championship routes of the season. Eala defeated 2024 Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending Washington champion Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, and Pegula. Every opponent had reached a Grand Slam final or held a current Top 10 ranking.
Svitolina, Osaka, and Pegula entered as the tournament’s top three seeds. Eala’s victories over Svitolina and Pegula raised her 2026 total to seven wins against Top 10 opponents, tied for the tour lead.
The championship lifted Eala eight places to a career-high world No. 20. She became the first Filipina to enter the WTA Top 20 and now heads to the National Bank Open in Toronto with a first-round bye.
