TALK ABOUT A GODSENT ANGEL!
Angel Quiñanola San Diego had not even graduated from nursing school when she found herself assisting an emergency childbirth on a roadside in San Fernando, Cebu. With no doctor or hospital at the scene, the young Filipina put her medical training to work, helping a newborn cry and receive immediate care.
The unexpected delivery took place in the morning of Oct. 2, in Barangay Pitalo. Angel was asleep when her mother woke her after a pregnant woman went into labor inside a vehicle parked outside their gate.
The mother, Jessica Manloloyo, was headed to a lying-in clinic when she gave birth before reaching medical assistance.
Angel, a graduating nursing student at the University of Cebu–Banilad, stepped in using the knowledge she had acquired in school and a Community Health Nursing bag stocked with basic medical supplies.
After checking the newborn, she gently stimulated the baby to encourage crying. The infant responded, allowing Angel to perform initial umbilical cord care and advise the family to seek additional medical attention.
Her intervention was particularly crucial because the first moments after birth require careful monitoring of a baby’s breathing, warmth and overall condition.
“Despite the pressure, I tried to remain calm and focused on the immediate needs of the mother and newborn,” Angel recalled,
according to the University of Cebu.
Angel’s actions drew praise online, with netizens celebrating the young nursing student for responding to an emergency even before completing her education and becoming a registered nurse.
The University of Cebu–Banilad also recognized her efforts, describing her actions as an example of how nursing students can apply their training when people urgently need help.
