PGMN Anchor Jourdan Sebastian challenged former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV over his corruption allegations against the Duterte family, questioning the evidence supporting his claims and saying that efforts to remove Vice President Sara Duterte could instead boost the political prospects of her brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte. In his latest episode, Jourdan questioned Trillanes’ use of spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and photocopied documents as the basis for his allegations. He argued that serious accusations must be supported by evidence strong enough to withstand scrutiny under oath.
“Anong resibo? PowerPoint, PowerPoint, PowerPoint. Ito namang si Trillanes,” Jourdan said.
“In fairness, maganda na binibring up itong questions na ‘to. Pero ang problema, yung level of attack na gusto niyo na maniwala kami, hindi backed up by evidence and not backed up by courage to go to the impeachment court.”
Trillanes’ absence from the witness stand during the impeachment proceedings also raised questions. Jourdan argued that formal testimony and cross-examination would have allowed the allegations to be examined more closely.
Jourdan also warned that attempts to remove Sara could have significant political consequences. Rather than weakening the Duterte family, Jourdan said the attacks could raise Baste’s national profile and strengthen his appeal among Filipinos who continue to support former President Rody Duterte.
“Pero you don’t get the point kung bakit hanggang ngayon kahit bira kayo ng bira sa mga Duterte ay hindi niyo napapabagsak yung popularity nila,” Jourdan said.
Many Filipinos, according to Jourdan, continue supporting the Dutertes because of their ability to connect with ordinary citizens. He argued that critics have failed to recognize why the family’s leadership continues to resonate with voters.
The Senate impeachment court is scheduled to resume hearings on Nov. 9 following a temporary break for legislative work, including deliberations on the proposed 2027 national budget.
