President Bongbong Marcos received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) during its 58th Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center – PICC in Pasay City.
Marcos accepted the distinction while addressing the university’s graduates, faculty, and officials, describing the honor as a responsibility that comes with the recognition.
“I receive this honor with gratitude, mindful of the responsibility that comes with it,” Marcos said.
Marcos also acknowledged the role of academic institutions in advancing the country. He said the honor reflected a shared commitment between his administration and PLM to education as a means of creating opportunities, driving progress, and building the nation.
Marcos also referenced PLM’s commencement theme, “Mga Makabagong Pantas Taglay ang Karunungan Tungo sa Kadakilaan at Kaunlaran,” stressing that education should extend beyond knowledge and inspire service and meaningful contributions to society.
“And that, more than any degree or title bestowed today, is the standard to which I hold myself,” Marcos said.
The President also pointed to PLM’s personal connection to his family, noting that First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos once taught law at the university’s College of Law. He said her time in legal education gave her firsthand insight into the commitment of students preparing for their professions.
PLM, a public university founded by the City of Manila in 1965, has conferred honorary degrees on individuals recognized for achievements in public service, law, education, and other fields. It is regarded as one of the country’s prominent local government-funded higher education institutions.
The distinction adds to the honors Marcos has received throughout his public career as his administration continues its programs focused on education, governance, and national development.
