Mapúa University-Makati student Fiel Reyes captured two medals for the Philippines in her international debut at the 19th World Taekwondo Culture Expo in Muju, Jeonbuk State, South Korea.
The 21-year-old Filipina won the gold medal in poomsae and the silver medal in kyorugi (sparring) during the tournament held from July 16 to 21, marking her first podium finishes in international competition.
Reyes topped the poomsae event before adding a silver medal in kyorugi, finishing with podium finishes in both disciplines featured at the expo.
The 19th edition of the event brought together about 4,000 athletes, coaches, officials and visitors from 27 countries for six days of competition, training and cultural exchange.
The expo also featured poomsae and kyorugi competitions, cultural performances, industry exhibitions, educational seminars, demonstrations and cultural tours, while promoting Korean culture, tourism and taekwondo through competition and knowledge-sharing.
Reyes’ gold and silver medals capped a successful international debut, giving both Mapúa and the Philippines a two-medal haul at the global event.
“Congratulations, Fiel! You have made your family and the Philippines proud. Mabuhay ka! May your journey continue to inspire young athletes to dream bigger, work harder, and never be afraid to take on new challenges,” the World Olympics Taekwondo Foundation Philippines said.
