Filipina tennis player Alex Eala has climbed to World No. 30 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association rankings following her semifinal finish at the Berlin Tennis Open.
Eala earned 195 ranking points from her campaign in the WTA 500 grass-court tournament in Germany, where she advanced to the semifinals in her tournament debut. She also received €57,395 in prize money.
The 21-year-old defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 before advancing past World No. 17 Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. Her run ended in the semifinals with a loss to former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
The latest rankings place Eala at No. 30, making her one of 32 seeded players for Wimbledon, which begins on June 30 in London.
Eala’s rise follows a breakthrough season on the WTA Tour, highlighted by her run to the Miami Open semifinals in March. She became the first Filipina to reach the semifinals of a WTA 1000 tournament after defeating three Grand Slam champions during the event.
The Berlin Tennis Open served as the final major tune-up event before Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. Eala is expected to compete in the women’s singles main draw as a seeded player.
