Filipina tennis star Alex Eala has reached another historic milestone after becoming the highest-ranked Southeast Asian woman in WTA singles history.
The latest official WTA rankings placed Eala at World No. 18, surpassing the previous Southeast Asian mark set by Indonesia’s Yayuk Basuki and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn, who both reached No. 19 during their careers.
At 21 years old, Eala has continued a breakthrough 2026 season that has produced several firsts for Philippine tennis. Earlier this month, she became the first Filipino player to win a WTA singles title after defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the final of the Washington Open.
Her victory also made her the first Southeast Asian woman to win a WTA 500 title. Basuki and Tanasugarn won their WTA singles titles in Tier III and Tier IV events, which are equivalent to today’s WTA 250 tournaments.
Eala’s rise has also rewritten Philippine tennis records. Before her breakthrough, the highest-ranked Filipino women’s singles players in the Open Era were Maricris Fernandez-Gentz at No. 284, Francesca La’O at No. 386, and Katharina Lehnert at No. 389.
Among Filipino men, Felix Barrientos reached No. 180 in singles, while Cecil Mamiit achieved a career-high No. 72 while representing the United States before later playing for the Philippines.
Eala’s climb has been rapid throughout the year. She reached No. 30 in June after a semifinal appearance at the Berlin Tennis Open, moved to No. 28 after Wimbledon, and climbed to No. 20 following her Washington title run.
Her latest ranking places her within the world’s Top 20 and establishes a new benchmark for Philippine tennis. Eala’s rise also puts her within reach of Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan, who remains the highest-ranked Southeast Asian player in the Open Era after reaching No. 9 in ATP singles in 2003.
