Sen. Bong Go has filed separate Senate resolutions honoring Alex Eala, EJ Obiena and Carlos Yulo for their recent achievements on the international stage in tennis, pole vault and gymnastics. Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Sports, said the resolutions recognize their accomplishments while reinforcing his call for stronger grassroots sports development.
The resolution for Eala highlighted her historic campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, where she became the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam after defeating defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Świątek.
Go also recognized Obiena following his consecutive outdoor gold-medal performances. According to World Athletics, Obiena won the Czesław Cybulski Memorial in Poznań, Poland, on June 28 with a 5.72-meter clearance before capturing the Raiffeisen Austrian Open in Eisenstadt on July 1 after clearing 5.75 meters.
Yulo, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was likewise honored after claiming the men’s floor exercise title at the 2026 Asian Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Zunyi, China. He topped the event with 14.700 points, adding another international championship to his decorated career.
Go said the accomplishments of Eala, Obiena and Yulo should encourage both national and local governments to invest more in sports development long before athletes reach the elite level. He added that sports should be viewed not only through medals but also as a means of developing young Filipinos.
