Novak Djokovic, widely regarded as the greatest tennis player of all time, has found vindication for his decision to decline the COVID-19 vaccine, which he revisited in his documentary The Wolf in Winter that offered a deeper look into his legendary career.
In the documentary, he said he believed he did not need the vaccine because he was healthy, and describing the decision as a matter of personal freedom and his right to make choices about his own body.
“Why should I get the vaccine? I’m healthy, I’m an athlete. I had corona. I had immunity. I wasn’t a threat to anyone. There was no reason for me to get vaccinated,” he said.
“It’s my freedom to choose—which is that fundamental right that you have as a human being on this planet. The freedom to choose was taken from a lot of people.”
On X, comedian Russell Brand praised Djokovic for standing his ground, while Elon Musk reacted to the tennis star’s stance by saying, “He was right.” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also thanked Djokovic online for “standing up for freedom.”
In 2022, the Serbian star missed major tournaments, including the Australian Open and US Open, after refusing vaccination amid government entry requirements in countries such as Australia and the United States. His decision also kept him out of other major events, including Indian Wells, the Miami Open, the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters.
Other professional athletes also faced criticism during the pandemic over their decisions not to receive COVID-19 vaccines. NBA star Kyrie Irving faced widespread backlash after refusing to comply with New York City’s vaccine mandate, limiting his availability for the Brooklyn Nets during the 2021-22 season. NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers drew intense attention after revealing he was unvaccinated and later discussing his views on COVID-19 policies.
Despite the controversy over his vaccine refusal, Djokovic continued to excel after the pandemic. He won three Grand Slam titles in 2023, raised his men’s singles Grand Slam record to 24 championships, and captured Olympic gold in 2024.
