A pine tree planted decades earlier by a Cebu resident became an unexpected lifesaver when a minibus carrying students nearly fell into a ravine in Dalaguete, Cebu, in 2010.

On August 20, 2010, a minibus carrying students from the Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) was traveling along a downhill zigzag road toward a camping retreat in Mantalongon, Dalaguete when the vehicle lost control and headed toward a steep drop.

The vehicle’s engine reportedly overheated while going down a curve, causing the driver to lose control. The minibus was stopped after crashing into a pine tree near the edge of the cliff, preventing it from plunging into the ravine.

The tree had been planted around 32 to 35 years earlier by Epimaco Amancio, a local resident who never expected it would one day help protect lives.

The minibus was carrying college students, their companions, and the driver. No one died in the accident, while several students sustained minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital.

The incident became a reminder of how planting and protecting trees can create lasting effects. Across the Philippines, reforestation efforts continue as communities work to restore forests, protect ecosystems, and strengthen natural barriers against environmental risks.

Amancio’s pine tree showed how a simple act done decades earlier could leave an impact far beyond its original purpose, providing protection when it was needed most.
