Acting Senate President Win Gatchalian and members of the Senate New Majority have pledged to donate one month of their salaries to support relief and recovery efforts for communities affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao.
The announcement came as government agencies, local governments, and emergency responders continued rescue, relief, and recovery operations in affected areas.
In a statement, the bloc said it was extending assistance to families and communities facing the challenges brought by the disaster.
“Let the whole Senate stand with Mindanao,” the group said as it encouraged fellow senators to contribute their own one-month salaries to support relief efforts.
The senators also expressed solidarity with residents affected by the earthquake.
“The Senate New Majority stands with the families and communities in Mindanao who are now facing the painful work of rescue, relief, rebuilding and recovery after the powerful earthquake,” the bloc said.
The move comes as affected communities continue to grapple with the damage left by the powerful earthquake while recovery efforts remain underway.
Beyond announcing the contribution, the bloc called on other members of the Senate to join the initiative and help provide additional support for families and communities affected by the disaster.
Relief and recovery operations remain ongoing in several parts of Mindanao as authorities continue damage assessments, distribute assistance, and address the needs of residents affected by the earthquake.
The Senate New Majority’s appeal comes as communities across Mindanao begin the difficult process of rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and recovering from the disaster.
