High school sweethearts Carmella Joy Hernandez and Kieth turned their lives around after years apart in detention, eventually becoming entrepreneurs with businesses spanning bicycles, e-bikes, vehicles, food and condominium rentals.
Their story was featured by GMA’s Good News in 2024, where the couple recalled how their involvement in illegal drugs led to detention while they were still young. Carmella, who was a minor at the time, spent three years under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, while Kieth, already an adult, spent one year in jail.
Despite being separated, the two stayed in contact through handwritten letters delivered by Carmella’s mother during weekly visits.
“Iniipon po namin, bale seven letters every week,” Carmella recalled.
Both said the experience made them regret their past decisions and pushed them to rebuild their lives after their release.
They first looked for work and saved money before starting a small frozen-food business. As their capital grew, they began adding more products and exploring other ways to earn.
A March 2023 feature by Marikeño provided more details about how Carmella, also known as Ella, entered the bicycle business. She initially sold food items such as fish balls and kikiam online before borrowing money from her older sister April in August 2020 to begin selling bicycles.
The business quickly gained traction.
April, who was working in a bank at the time, eventually left her job to help manage the venture’s finances, marketing and networking, while Carmella focused on sales. As orders increased, their family home was gradually transformed into a storage area filled with bicycles.
According to the feature, they were selling around 25 bicycles a day at one point, allowing them to repay the money they had borrowed sooner than expected.
In May 2021, they opened a warehouse along Lilac Street in Concepcion Dos, Marikina, giving them more space for their growing inventory. By December of the same year, they had developed the location into a proper store and warehouse.
“Oo, inaamin namin, mahirap ang buhay pero kinaya namin. Hindi kami sumuko,” the sisters told Marikeño.
By the time GMA featured Carmella and Kieth in 2024, the couple had reportedly become millionaires and expanded beyond bicycles and e-bikes into other ventures, including vehicle sales, a restaurant and condominium rentals.
From detention and handwritten letters to frozen food, bicycles and multiple businesses, their journey became a story of second chances and rebuilding a life through persistence and entrepreneurship.
