Operation Rising Lion: What we know about the Israel–Iran strikes and drone retaliation

A new phase of military escalation has erupted in the Middle East. In the early hours of June 13, Israel launched a sweeping pre-emptive air strike campaign against Iran, targeting what it claimed were key nuclear and military installations.

Dubbed “Operation Rising Lion” by Israeli officials, the mission involved over 200 fighter jets and reportedly struck sites including the Natanz nuclear facility, missile depots, and command centers deep within Iranian territory. Among those confirmed killed isIranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami.

In response, Iran launched approximately 100 drones in a retaliatory strike aimed at Israeli cities and military targets. Israeli authorities quickly shut down civilian airspace and activated air-defense systems nationwide.

Air raid sirens were heard across central and northern Israel, and while most of the drones were intercepted, debris injured around 50 people, many of whom were hurt while seeking shelter or from falling fragments.

The situation marked one of the most direct confrontations between the two countries in years, threatening to ignite a broader regional conflict.

This latest exchange did not come out of nowhere. Earlier this month, on June 5, Israeli warplanes reportedly struck southern Beirut, targeting Hezbollah drone facilities allegedly linked to Hamas.

Then on June 10, Israeli naval forces bombed the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeidah in Yemen, in what was described as a move to sever weapons supply lines from Iran-backed rebels.

These actions suggested a strategy to dismantle Iran’s regional proxy network ahead of what now appears to have been a long-planned strike inside Iran itself.

The global response has been swift and cautious. The United States distanced itself from the Israeli operation, confirming that it was informed beforehand but was US braces for potential Israeli strike on Iran even as Trump pursues nuclear deal – ABC News not involved in the attack.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. position remains focused on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while also trying to avoid escalation. Diplomatic sources have said that the strikes could jeopardize ongoing U.S.–Iran nuclear talks, which were scheduled to resume this week in Oman.

Meanwhile, oil prices surged dramatically as investors priced in the risk of prolonged instability in the region. Brent crude spiked by more than 8% in a single trading session, and stock markets in Asia and Europe reacted with a mix of concern and volatility.

Air travel was also affected—several carriers, including Air India and Lufthansa, rerouted or cancelled flights to Tel Aviv and surrounding airspace.

The international community has urged restraint. Leaders from the United Nations, European Union, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Australia have all issued statements expressing concern over the potential for further escalation.

Some analysts warn that if Iran chooses to escalate beyond drone retaliation, such as missile strikes or cyberattacks, it could set off a regional war involving not just Israel, but also Hezbollah, U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and Syria, and possibly Gulf states.

This story is still developing, and whether this tit-for-tat exchange ends here or marks the beginning of a much larger confrontation, remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the balance of power in the Middle East is shifting, and the world is watching closely.
