After evading Philippine officials in the Czech Republic, fugitive former lawmaker Zaldy Co is now seeking political asylum in France, placing him under a new jurisdiction as government efforts to bring him back continue. Malacañang confirmed Tuesday that the Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of the Philippines received “highly reliable information” that Co has a pending asylum petition.
Co was earlier held in the Czech Republic after entering with invalid documentation but was released after authorities found he had not violated any Czech law. The Department of Justice has since confirmed that he is no longer in Czech custody.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Co is now under the jurisdiction of French authorities. She added that Philippine diplomatic missions across Europe have been directed to obtain official confirmation of his status as the government continues coordination with foreign counterparts.
President Bongbong Marcos expressed disappointment after learning Co was no longer in Czech custody. “Disappointed siya kasi malapit na sana mapauwi pero since may ibang bansang involved, ang bansang Czech ang mag-uutos ano gagawin,” Castro said.
Castro stressed that Czech authorities acted within their legal framework, noting Co’s detention was based only on documentation issues. Without a criminal violation under Czech law, continued custody was not legally possible.
Co is wanted in the Philippines on graft and malversation charges linked to alleged anomalous flood control projects. His move to seek asylum adds a new legal layer that could affect how and when Philippine authorities may secure his return.
The government said it will continue pursuing all legal and diplomatic channels to bring him back to face charges.
