Born in the Philippines, Sheila Lirio Marcelo’s journey toward becoming a tech powerhouse started long before she founded Care.com.

Growing up in a family immersed in various businesses — from plantations to transportation services — Sheila was no stranger to entrepreneurship.

When her family relocated to Houston in 1977, they opened one of the area’s first Asian grocery stores and restaurants.

At just seven years old, Sheila was already answering calls and observing the challenges of running a business.

These early experiences laid the foundation for her passion for creating transformative solutions across industries.

Breaking Away from Tradition to Forge Her Own Path

Though Sheila’s parents hoped she would follow a traditional career in law, her journey took a different turn. After being accepted to Harvard Law School, Sheila deferred to explore a job in litigation consulting.

It didn’t take long for her to realize that her true calling wasn’t in law but in tech and business.

Sheila’s decision to pursue a JD/MBA at Harvard Business School wasn’t just about acquiring credentials — it was about finding her unique voice in the tech world, a world where she could merge her problem-solving abilities with her entrepreneurial drive.

In 2006, Sheila faced a problem that many working parents know all too well: finding reliable childcare and eldercare.

Faced with this personal challenge, she had an epiphany: what if there was a platform that connected families with trustworthy caregivers? And thus, Care.com was born.

With $5 million in funding from Matrix Partners, Sheila built the platform from the ground up, growing it into the largest online caregiving marketplace in just a few years.

In its first year, Care.com saw $4 million in revenue, quickly catching the attention of the market.

By 2014, the company went public, raising $91 million — a testament to Sheila’s vision and ability to scale a tech startup into a global leader.

A Leadership Journey: Purpose Over Profits

Sheila’s leadership approach goes beyond the boardroom. She didn’t just want to build a successful company — she wanted to create a business that had a positive, lasting impact.

From the outset, Sheila focused on transparency, iterative learning, and building a company that reflected her values. As Care.com expanded, Sheila transitioned from focusing on personal achievements to fostering a team-centric culture.

Her philosophy — evolving from “Me to We” — centers on empowering others to contribute to a shared mission, creating a company culture driven by purpose.

In 2014, Care.com went public, raising $91 million in an IPO that saw the company’s stock surge 43% on its first day. But for Sheila, the IPO wasn’t just about financial success — it was a milestone that confirmed her company was filling a vital need in the caregiving market.

It marked a moment of validation for Sheila’s vision, proving that a tech startup could have a meaningful impact on people’s lives while still scaling to meet a global demand.

After Care.com: New Ventures and a New Vision

Following the IAC acquisition of Care.com in 2020, Sheila didn’t slow down. She shifted her focus to other technology-driven ventures, including Proof of Learn, a platform designed to democratize education through blockchain and AI.

Most recently, Sheila co-founded Ohai.ai, a startup focused on using artificial intelligence to improve family life by solving everyday problems. With its official launch slated for 2024, Ohai.ai is poised to make an impact, just as Care.com did.

Sheila Lirio Marcelo: A Legacy of Empowerment and Innovation

Sheila’s journey is more than a series of business successes. It’s a testament to the power of persistence, innovation, and purpose. From navigating the early days of Care.com to co-founding new ventures, Sheila continues to break barriers and redefine what it means to be a tech entrepreneur.

She is proof that the challenges we face personally can lead to the most transformative ideas. And in Sheila’s case, those ideas are shaping the future of caregiving, education, and AI technology.

Her impact goes far beyond profits; it’s about using technology to create lasting solutions that make people’s lives better.

Through her ventures, Sheila has proven that business and social good can go hand in hand, offering inspiration to the next generation of entrepreneurs who are focused on more than just the bottom line.
