A diploma and three distinctions capped years of work for Gerobe P. Arce, who drove a tricycle before classes, returned to the road when his schedule allowed, and studied after long days earning passenger fares.
At 24, Arce graduated from the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology with a Bachelor of Industrial Technology major in Automotive. Before commencement, he was honored at the Dayaw 2026 Recognition Rites at the university’s Main Campus–Poblacion Site in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
Arce received the Academic Distinction Award, Best Thesis Award, and Best OJT Trainee in Automotive Award. The recognition marked a standout finish to a college journey in which he used his tricycle earnings to support his education and daily needs.
Despite financial pressure and the demands of balancing work with school, Arce said he never seriously considered leaving his studies.
Arce, who has dwarfism or is of short stature, completed his degree and earned recognition in both academic and practical work. His interest in machines began in childhood, and he later trained at F&E Automotive Division in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
His father, who also has short stature, stood beside him during the earlier recognition ceremony. Arce has credited his family, teachers, classmates, and the ISUFST community for supporting him throughout his education.
He now hopes to continue in the automotive field, open a repair shop of his own, or pursue opportunities abroad. His graduation and three awards marked the result of years spent earning fares, meeting course requirements, and working toward a future in the field he had chosen long before college.
