Trump tells new socialist NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani to ‘be nice’ after tense post-victory comments

Donald Trump didn’t stay silent after New York City’s new mayor used his victory speech to take aim at him. Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist who just won the mayoral race, celebrated his win by calling Trump a ‘despot’ and declaring that New York would remain a city ‘built by immigrants and led by an immigrant.’

His fiery speech was met with cheers from his supporters but quickly drew attention from Washington. Trump, 79, responded by saying Mamdani “should be very nice to me,” a line that immediately made headlines.

The president told Fox News that Mamdani’s remarks were “angry” and “disrespectful,” warning that the new mayor was off to a bad start. He reminded reporters that many projects and funds that benefit New York require federal approval.

Trump also hinted that the city could lose support if Mamdani continues to make politics personal, calling the exchange “a very dangerous way to begin.” The comment came just days after Trump criticized Mamdani on Truth Social, labeling him a “communist” and warning that New York could face consequences for electing a socialist.

Mamdani’s rise marks a major political shift for New York. The first Muslim and youngest mayor in more than a century, he won with strong backing from progressives and immigrant communities.

His victory speech was framed as a rallying cry for the left, with promises of expanded public programs and protection for undocumented residents. Critics, however, see his tone as confrontational and his agenda as risky for a city still struggling with affordability, crime, and high taxes.

Trump’s warning underscored that Washington intends to keep a close eye on the new administration. His remarks showed confidence and control, a reminder that federal cooperation depends on mutual respect.

While Mamdani’s supporters celebrate a symbolic win for progressives, Trump made it clear that fiery rhetoric won’t replace results. For New York to thrive, both leaders will need to prove who can lead with more than applause.
