The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is teaming up with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to create new opportunities for Filipino workers and future-proof the nation’s industries.
This collaboration focuses on advancing key sectors like semiconductors, business process outsourcing (BPO), and critical minerals through the WEF’s Jobs Accelerator Network Initiative.
Workforce Resilience and Economic Growth
Trade Secretary Maria Cristina A. Roque met with WEF’s Head of Work Wages and Job Creation, Till Leopold, during the WEF 2025 in Davos. Together, they discussed leveraging the Jobs Accelerator initiative to position the Philippines as a hub for innovation and workforce excellence.
“This partnership holds the promise of a brighter future for the Philippines,” said Roque.
The initiative aims to prepare the Philippine workforce for the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy by equipping workers with cutting-edge skills and fostering resilient industries.
The semiconductor and electronics sector, in particular, stands to benefit as the country continues to attract investments from global tech leaders.
Global Investments on the Horizon
In addition to the WEF collaboration, the DTI has been actively inviting global companies to invest in the Philippines. Trade officials have been in talks with major firms like PayPal to improve digital financial inclusion for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
They also explored partnerships with A.P. Moller-Maersk for port development in Visayas and Mindanao, aiming to boost logistics and marine infrastructure.
Other discussions include:
- Cognizant: Plans to expand tech operations in the Philippines.
- AstraZeneca: Increasing clinical trials in the country.
- Shein: Establishing manufacturing operations in the Philippines.
- Malaysian Firms: Exploring transmission tower projects and semiconductor opportunities.
DTI’s Trade Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo emphasized the potential of these partnerships to drive innovation and create jobs. “Strengthening these partnerships goes beyond numbers. It’s about fostering innovation and building lasting connections that benefit both our economies,” he said.
A Competitive Future
With initiatives like the Jobs Accelerator Network and growing interest from global firms, the Philippines is poised for significant economic transformation.
This collaboration with WEF and international investors showcases the country’s readiness to support emerging industries while empowering its workforce to excel on a global stage.
