Alexandra Eala, a name quickly becoming synonymous with success in international tennis, is a Filipina sensation who has been breaking barriers and winning hearts across the globe.

Known for her powerhouse performances on the court, Eala has become one of the most exciting young players to watch in tennis, and her recent stunning victories at the Miami Open are just the latest chapter in what is sure to be a storied career.

A Rising Star: Who is Alexandra Eala?

Born into a family steeped in athletic talent, Alexandra Eala has always had a natural inclination for sports. Her mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, is a SEA Games bronze medalist in swimming, and her brother, Miko, plays tennis at Pennsylvania State University. It’s no surprise that Eala would follow in their footsteps, carving out her own path in the world of tennis.

At just 19 years old, Eala has already accomplished feats that many of her peers only dream of. Her journey into professional tennis began with a bang in 2020, when she became the first Filipina player in over 25 years to qualify for the prestigious International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Junior Tennis Tournament.

That same year, she made history again by being the first Filipino to compete in a Grand Slam tournament in 28 years, debuting at the US Open Juniors competition.

Eala’s rise continued rapidly, with her reaching the number 2 spot in the ITF Girls’ Junior Rankings in 2020. She also won the Australian Girls’ Doubles title, becoming the first Filipino to win a Junior Grand Slam event since 2009.

Later that year, Eala made waves at the French Open Juniors, becoming the first Filipino to reach the semifinals of the tournament in over 30 years.

In 2021, she added another major achievement to her growing list of accomplishments by winning the French Open Girls’ Doubles title alongside her partner Oksana Selekhmateva. She continued her impressive form, culminating in her US Open Juniors singles title win in 2022, solidifying her place among the sport’s rising stars.

Eala’s Historic Win at the Miami Open

One of Eala’s most notable accomplishments came during the Miami Open, where she stunned tennis fans around the world by defeating Iga Świątek, the five-time Grand Slam champion, in straight sets to reach her first WTA semifinal.

With a commanding performance, Eala secured the win 6-2, 7-5, using her powerful left-handed forehand and precision return of serve to topple the World No. 2.

Her victory was a historic one, not only for her but also for her country, as she became the first Filipina to reach a WTA semifinal. Eala’s win over Świątek followed her earlier victories over Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, showcasing her impressive ability to go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in tennis.

“I’m in complete disbelief right now, and I’m on cloud nine,” Eala said in her post-match interview, still processing her incredible feat.

Training at the Rafa Nadal Academy and Future Aspirations

Eala’s growth as a player has been nurtured at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, where she moved at the age of 13 to train with some of the best tennis players in Europe.

The academy, renowned for producing top-tier talent, has been the perfect environment for Eala to hone her skills. Despite her success, she has remained grounded, balancing her tennis career with her studies at the American International School of Mallorca.

As she continues to make history on the court, Eala remains focused on the future. She is determined to break into the top 100 of the WTA rankings, and with her incredible talent and relentless drive, it seems only a matter of time before she achieves this goal.

Eala’s stunning victory at the Miami Open is just the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary career. As a trailblazer in Philippine tennis, she is not just breaking records—she is inspiring the next generation of athletes in the country and around the world.

Eala’s Dream Run at the Miami Open Ends with Heartfelt Loss

Alexandra Eala’s historic run at the Miami Open came to a close in the semifinals, as she lost to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3. Eala started strong, holding a 5-2 lead in the first set, but Pegula fought back to win the set. Eala battled through an ankle injury in the second set, tying the match at 5-all and eventually taking the set 7-5 to force a decider.

In the third set, both players were neck and neck, but Pegula’s experience shone through as she closed out the match 6-3. Despite the loss, Eala’s impressive victories over Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Świątek earned her a USD 332,160 prize and propelled her into the top 100 of the WTA rankings.

Pegula praised Eala’s game, calling her “a really good tennis player” and a tough competitor.

Looking Ahead: A Star in the Making

With the support of her family, coaches, and fans, Alexandra Eala is poised to achieve even greater heights in the tennis world. Whether it’s competing in the Grand Slams or making a name for herself in the WTA circuit, one thing is clear: Eala’s journey has only just begun, and the tennis world will be watching as she continues to rise to the top.

Let’s keep cheering on Alexandra Eala as she rewrites the future of Filipino tennis, one victory at a time.
