The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center – CICC is coordinating with Meta to quickly remove videos of the Aug. 18 Ateneo de Zamboanga University shooting as authorities move to limit the spread of violent content online.
The attack was livestreamed by the student gunman, allowing footage to circulate widely on social media. CICC Director Atty. Alexander “Aboy” Ramos said the agency continues to monitor copies of the videos and other online activity related to the incident.
“Nakikipag-ugnayan na rin kami sa Meta para sa agarang pag-take down nito upang hindi na ito patuloy na kumalat at magdulot ng panic sa publiko o magamit pa sa pag-impluwensiya sa iba,” the CICC said.
The agency urged netizens to stop reposting the footage, warning that continued sharing gives the violence a wider audience and could influence other users, particularly minors.
The Presidential Communications Office also appealed for restraint from news organizations covering incidents involving children. PCO Secretary Dave Gomez urged “extreme care and responsibility,” saying reports should avoid details that could violate the dignity and privacy of minors and bereaved families, disrupt investigations, or “encourage copycat acts.”
The CICC also asked parents to closely monitor their children’s activity on social media and gaming platforms.
“Sa mga magulang, bantayan po natin ang aktibidad ng ating mga anak sa social media at gaming platforms, lalo na ang mga menor de edad. Panatilihin natin ang bukas na komunikasyon sa ating mga tahanan,” the agency said.
The CICC said monitoring will continue with other government agencies and stakeholders as authorities work to prevent graphic footage and potentially harmful content from spreading further.
